It is two weeks into the new year. Did yours start filled with hope of new beginnings? There seems to be something ingrained within us about a blank slates – getting to start fresh and new, when we can paint our picture or write our own story. Somehow the start of a new year occurs to many of us like a new start on life – a time to “start fresh.”
I think there is great value in evaluating where we are in life: looking at who we are (the person we have become), the actions we are – or are not – taking, and whether any of that is in sync with what we want. If I want to be a kind, compassionate, giving person, but my ways of being, actions, and attitudes have been self centered and less than kind, then it’s can be very powerful to check in, see that, and choose a new path.
Many of us step into the new year with resolutions (or maybe more like “hopes” or “ideas”) to change our ways. Whether it’s about our health, our habits, our behaviors, our thoughts, our religious/spiritual practices, or whatever it may be, we often set out with great expectations and hope for how THIS year is going to be THE year that it sticks!
And then life happens
And we “fall off the wagon”
And we give up … often with internal (or perhaps even external) personal commentary about how we suck, or how we didn’t really want it anyway, or how impossible and unattainable it was in the first place.
But here’s the thing: whatever moment we choose to start something new, that moment is NOW. That’s all we have, really. So if you’ve set out toward some intention and have fallen off the wagon, you REALLY do NOT have to wait until next January to give it another go.
The moment you start, whether today or next month or next year, that moment will be now. So why not start with today’s now?
Go for it!
(Side Note: There is no judgement here or assumption that you “should” be or do anything other than your own brand of you – there is a lot of zen in being where you are without trying to change or “fix” anything. You absolutely can be at peace where you are! But, if something matters to you that you choose to start new, take whatever speaks to you (if anything!)…and if you want a little more practical guidance, check out this article from a few years ago.)
